古代亀茲はシルクロード新疆区間（今の拜城、庫車地域）の中心地であり、また、亀茲石窟は現存最古の仏教石窟群にして敦煌・雲崗・龍門石窟と並ぶ中国四大石窟のひとつとされている。しかしながら、長い歴史による風化があり、さらには20世紀初頭の西域探検隊によって古代亀茲の貴重な文化遺産はことごとく海外へ持ち去られた。本書は、そうした文化遺産のうち、現在ロシアに所蔵されている芸術品を、文物図版262点、現場臨摹図100枚、写真27枚で紹介する。
